Our Story
Richard Kopfmann had a dream, after graduating from Boy's Tech in the 1950’s, he started his own business. This is probably because his father, who came over from Germany, also started his own business. Richard wanted to open up a countertop shop. He started out in his sisters’ garage and then moved to a rental unit behind a local Hardware store. In 1957 Richard decided to incorporate the business and moved to 4911 West Good Hope Road. It was there that the company really took shape. In 1963 he had one of the first hot presses made in Wisconsin spawning our custom-made single cove tops. In 1968 Richard became one of the first people in Wisconsin to post form laminate tops. In 1973 sensing the need for more production capacity he opened another plant in Mayville, Wisconsin. After many successful years he thought it would be better to consolidate operations back to one location and in the late 70's he moved both operations back to Milwaukee. It was here that he also became one of the first people to start fabricating Corian. The business continued to grow and in 1987 he moved to our current factory and showroom. Ten years later his son Bob took over the business and since then the business has grown to where we are today. Richard will always be remembered for founding what we enjoy today. The spirit and memories of Richard live on every day at The Kopfmann Co. Inc. His portrait hangs in our lobby where all of us who love and miss him still get to greet him daily. He was our mentor, friend and confidante. We rejoice and are comforted in knowing that he is in heaven, free of pain and watching over us.
