Scope Of Work

The new College of Medicine building is intended to be the first of many buildings located on 43 acres of previously undeveloped property just south of the central campus. The existing wetlands are the nesting site of a family of bald eagles and other wildlife which are protected from construction activities by 330 feet of chain link fencing.

The 125,000 SF building will feature a state-of-the-art anatomy suite, clinical skills lab, patient examination rooms, a simulation center, large team-based learning classrooms, small group meeting rooms, faculty and administrative offices, and dedicated social and study spaces. Students here will study medicine with a social mission of improving health in underserved communities in Houston and across Texas.

The exterior of the building will feature a combination of basalt stone and limestone masonry combined with curtainwall, spandrel, and vision glass systems. The focal circular glass window at the entrance, along with a clerestory at the top level, will illuminate the interior atrium. The natural lighting will enhance interior stonework that will surround the custom artwork. In addition, a central utility plant with water cooled chillers will serve the new College of Medicine and any future buildings.
