R. Zalon Thurman, Jr.'s Bio
R. Zalon Thurman, Jr. is Executive Vice President of Davidson and Jones Construction Company and oversees both pre-construction and construction operations. He started with the company in 2008 as an estimator/project manager before rising to Sr. Project Manager, and most recently, Executive VP. His early training was with another local Raleigh general contractor, where he learned the business of contracting. “I was taught the basics of general contracting by two gentlemen who insisted that I learn and practice contracting “their way,” and that was sticking with the basics, being honest, and working extremely hard.”. Like many at that time, those two fellows had both been either directly or indirectly employed and taught the same many years prior at Davidson and Jones.
Now with 20 years in the industry, much of that in the Triangle region and surrounding areas, he has estimated and managed construction projects in many sectors of the industry, including faith-based, medical, life science, educational, office/retail, automotive, and hospitality.“I enjoy private negotiated projects, but I always want to keep a presence in the public bid market. That is how I was taught, and that is how you keep your pencil sharp and stay relevant.” Zalon is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/Sociology.
While he has traveled extensively and studied/worked abroad, he is very clear on where he calls home. Zalon is a proud native North Carolinian, born and raised in Wilson, NC and when he is not building, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, hunting, offshore fishing, and carving duck and goose decoys. Zalon attends both Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh and The First Presbyterian Church in Wilson.
