Scope Of Work
Ford Motor Company solicited bids to the market place to provide a complete demolition and remediation of the former Cleveland Casting plant in a safe and efficient manner and selected the team of Independence Excavating (IX) and Precision Environmental to perform the work. The Cleveland Castings Plant was a part of the Ford Brookpark complex that included Engine Plant I, Engine Plant 2 and a power plant. Engine Plants 1 and 2 remained live during the entire demolition of the massive casting plant.
Prior to demolition, the casting plant structure had to be environmentally decommissioned. Independence Excavating worked cooperatively with subcontractors EnviroServe and Precision Environmental to perform the following abatement and decommissioning work: Abatement of asbestos containing building, materials, removal of PCB containing TSCA regulated materials including rooftop electrical transformers and associated slabs, removal and draining of all building fluids and oils, abatement of universal wastes and miscellaneous chemicals. In addition, the entire building superstructure was required to be washed down prior to demolition. Independence Excavating constructed a settling basin to allow for the nearly 3 million gallons of wash water to be decanted, sampled and conveyed to the local sanitary sewer system. In addition, IX removed a gasoline and diesel UST.
Once environmental decommissioning was complete Independence Excavating performed demolition of the following:
1.4M square foot footprint Main Plant Building consisting of the Shop, Core, Mold, Melt and Finishing Departments.
Sand Bay Walls classified and managed as a PCB bulk product waste
Central Transportation Garage
General Services Building
Cooling Gallery
Coke Shanty
Misc. Outlying Structures
Final phases included over 10 miles of underground sewer cleaning, installation of protective barriers for the remaining basements, and other interim site restoration activities.
