Our Story
In 1974, three young brothers—driven by a passion for building, a highly focused work ethic, and the entrepreneurial spirit of self-reliance—set out to fulfill a dream of starting a business. With Doug’s estimating acumen and industry network, Greg’s construction knowledge and foreman leadership, and Jeff’s mind for business and operations, they won numerous jobs in the early years with Magic Mountain, Newhall Land & Farming Co., Bank of America, Pacific Telephone, Veterans Administration (VA) Hospitals, and various retail businesses, while working from Greg’s spare bedroom.
Efficient pricing and quality of craftsmanship on dozens of successful jobs at Magic Mountain led the brothers to build the theme park’s signature structure, Colossus, the iconic and majestic wooden rollercoaster. Their reputation soared from there. Bernards has since completed an immense portfolio of projects in the education, retail, multi-family, mixed-use, entertainment, healthcare, hospitality, and civic sectors. The firm has expanded to five offices with a large presence throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, Central Valley and Central Coast.
The integrity and commitment to customer service the brothers showed during the company’s early years continues on and is reflected in the company culture of today. Now employing a family of over 280 professionals and counting, the company was converted to a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan, keeping the family culture fully intact while providing employees a stake in the success of the company.
