Scope Of Work
Elevating Student Housing
Situated on the main campus quad on a 1.9 acre site, this LEED® Silver dormitory facility accommodates 134 beds in one and two bedroom suites, lounges, group study rooms, laundry facilities, student storage, and a 55,000 SF parking lot. The 3-story, U-shaped building surrounds an active courtyard and central glass pavilion recreation lounge. Other features include custom cement and copper wall panels, copper roofing, and aluminum sunscreens.
Managing Trade Contractors Around Active Campuses
We implemented focused site logistics, coordinated planning efforts, and security measures to ensure maximum safety and minimal disruption to Harvey Mudd College’s active campus and student life. Critical to the development of solid constructability and value engineering solutions was the engagement of the following design-assist trade contractors: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, framing, and glass/glazing.
Pull Planning Expertise
In order to complete this student housing complex in time for the beginning of the school year, Bernards implemented an accelerated schedule and Lean Pull Planning to finish the job in less than 13 months. To expedite the schedule and streamline construction, Bernards executed the work in three phases: 1) the release of demo and earthwork trades, 2) the release of the MEP and rough-in trades, and 3) the release of the dry-in and finish trades. Each of these phases helped to take the plans to the next level and obtain permits for the subsequent phases.
