Scope Of Work
S912-05D – SP PERMEABLE SHOULDER REINFORCEMENT
Description This work shall consist of installing permeable shoulder for shoulder reinforcement in accordance with the lines, grades and dimensions shown on the plans or as established by the Engineer. More specifically, this work includes all labor, equipment and materials needed to prepare the foundation in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and install approved modular, interlocking ground reinforcing grids. This work also includes aggregate gravel to fill the reinforcing grids and any other incidental items required to complete the permeable shoulder. Aggregate base for foundation preparation to support grid installation will be paid under its respective item.
Materials. Permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be labeled to show the manufacture’s product style number and unique roll number. The contractor shall provide the Mill Certificate and average quality data for the production lot in accordance with ASTM D 4759. Acceptance of permeable shoulder reinforcing grid will be based on certification.
The contractor shall be responsible for obtaining the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid and associated components that meet all the requirements shown below.
Permeable Shoulder Grid Units:
The permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall consist of a regular network of connected longitudinal and transverse polymer elements constructed in a single layer. The axis with the least strength will be taken as the ultimate strength of the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid. Permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall meet the following requirements:

Core Fill Material for Grid Units. Core fill material for permeable shoulder grid units shall meet the requirements for ¾” type B aggregate base.
Construction Requirements
Permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be stored and handled in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and shall be protected from exposure to ultraviolet light and contamination by dirt, dust and any other deleterious material. The original protective covering shall remain on the product until installation.
The sub-grade shall be graded in accordance with the plans to ensure that the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid is laid flat and level on a relatively smooth surface. Rocks and other protrusions shall be removed and hollows and depressions shall be filled so that the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid is protected from damage and is in continuous contact with the underlying material. Compaction shall be Class A or as directed and shall be performed in accordance with Section 301. Permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be held in place as recommended by the manufacturer.
Permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be laid at the locations shown on the plans or as directed. The permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be placed by hand directly on the sub-grade ahead of backfilling. Vehicles shall not be driven on the unprotected permeable shoulder reinforcing grid prior to aggregate placement. Fill shall be placed from stockpiles using an excavator bucket. Damage to the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid shall be avoided and dumping from trucks directly onto the permeable shoulder reinforcing grid will not be allowed. Fill shall be spread so that it advances across the width of all grids.
Method of Measurement. Permeable Shoulder for Shoulder Reinforcement will be measured by the square yard in place.
Basis of Payment. Payment for accepted work will be made as follows:
