My front porch railing on the steps was falling over and I wanted a second railing on the other side to match so a friend suggested Empire Fence and Custom Iron Works stating I would get a good price from them and quality work. One of their rep's came out and took all the measurements and emailed me a quote to fab a new railing to match the old, weld new posts on the old one, dip the railings in paint and install both, $775. I thought it was a little high but I wanted it done and I was assured high quality. The installers came on June 21, I didn't see the 2 railings side by side until after they were installed and concrete poured. The new railing had a much longer top (break) than the old one (18 inches versus 9 inches) and set 5 inches higher above the step than the old railing (11 inches total height above the step).The water proofing putty that was put around the base looked like a child using play dough had done it. I contacted the gentleman who did the initial quote/measurements and told him of the issues. I stated that it appeared the wrong railing had been installed and sent him pictures. He responded and said he didn't know how it happened but he found my railing in the shop and the wrong one was indeed installed and they would get it replaced asap. I asked about the putty and he said that was needed that way to protect from water. The new crew arrived on June 21, removed the wrong railing and installed the correct one. The installer said that he would not have installed the last railing without checking with the shop due to the drastic difference. When they were done, the putty job on the base of each foot was so much better on the new railing, it looked professional, neat and like it was meant to be there versus the glopped on mound on the other railing. I emailed the person who set the job up again and sent him pictures of the two different putty jobs. I was hoping he would have someone come and fix the first one but I asked what kind of putty it was so I could re-do it just to set the tone so he knew I wanted it fixed. He gave me the name of the putty and offered me a tube, that's it. The new railing (now that it is the correct one) looks great and perfectly matches the old one but the quality of workmanship and overall customer experience was not what I expected for the price. I really expected an apology both for the installing the wrong railing requiring a second drilling and the poor quality on the putty job but, didn't get it from anyone. When I went to pay the bill today I kind of hoped the owner or who ever is in charge of quality to come out and talk to me. I emailed the billing department 2 days earlier and asked that they forward my email to the owner so they were aware when I came in. What I got was a cold shoulder, and no "thank you for your business", just a "sign here" after swiping my credit card. The one good thing about this entire experience was the second crew that came out today, courteous, apologetic and very professional quality workmanship. I would recommend them but unfortunately not the company they work for.
