Scope Of Work
The DePaul Cancer Institute is the first phase of a multi-phased realignment and redevelopment of the DePaul Medical Center campus in Norfolk, Virginia. The project consists of a 4 story, approximately 110,000 square foot, business occupancy building, with cancer treatment services on the ground level. The building massing is broken up into glass, brick and stone volumes creating a dynamic building that is fully integrated into the site.
As you approach the building down the main thoroughfare of the campus, the visitor is met by a liner glass volume that serves as both the main entry and the main public circulation spine through the building. The glass volume has an elegantly composed pattern of clear and fritted glass panels which is capped by a thin plane of metal and wood panels. This plane extends out over the main entry creating an open and welcoming experience as you approach the building. The pattern in the curtain wall creates a beautiful texture of light and shadow that is experienced from both the interior and exterior while also giving the visitors on the interior some sense of privacy. Along the south façade of the building a 1 story stone volume extends out as a gesture to the lower scale of the residential neighborhood. As you move west along this stone mass it begins to open up, revealing a tranquil therapy garden that serves the patients of the cancer center.
