Marcel O. Goneau's Bio
Founder Marcel O. Goneau grew up in the North Carolina Sandhills and as a boy, he built his share of secret forts, doghouses and imaginative tree houses (he believed in repurposed materials even then), but it wasn’t until his sophomore year at The O’Neal School that his art teacher recognized his special talent and encouraged him to pursue architecture as a profession.
After earning his Associates degree in Architecture from Sandhills Community College he was hired by one of the area’s top design and construction firms in Pinehurst and continued to expand his career from there. Over the last 30+ years he has designed and delivered hundreds of custom home construction drawings and created more than a dozen regional and national award winning designs. He worked as the Executive Vice President of Speight-Goneau Construction and in 2003 started a land acquisition and development company, which led him to launch a business venture in Belize, Central America.
Marcel brings a rare exuberance and enthusiasm to every custom home project, large or small. He engages and energizes you to be a genuine part of the creative process.
“It’s exciting to see a design grow and mature into its own character,” he emphasizes. “We build quality custom homes with personality. It’s that simple.”
Goneau sees each structure as a living, breathing entity. “It’s the tiny, human imperfections that create an emotional connection to where we live,” he believes. He gravitates towards using reclaimed materials whenever possible. “Old, sage-colored limestone, distressed hundred-year-old heart pine . . . real stone and real wood impart a very different kind of energy than man-made materials, not to mention durability.”
You can identify a Goneau build right away. His philosophy, where high performance green technology meets building elements infused with soul, makes the strategic difference in a Goneau home or commercial space.
“If I could, I’d go back to the time when the values of front porch communities held sway,” Marcel muses. “It’s my hope now to marry the best of tradition and contemporary technology and to inspire the future of architecture, just as my art teacher did for me.”
For the past 25 years, Marcel has been licensed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors with unlimited status. He is a member of the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) and currently serves as a Board Member of the Moore County Home Builders Association.
Marcel and his wife, Candice, their two children and their beloved rescue Labrador, Roxy, live on the border of Pinehurst and Southern Pines, in a custom home that he designed for his family.
