Scope Of Work

This project was a Design/Build for an administration building on an existing lava field on the island of Hawaii.  This was a ground up construction project and covered all major trades including: site work, foundation, framing, interior finishes, electrical, and mechanical.  This project featured government provided equipment and material.

        Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is set on the site of the Pu’uhonua, or the traditional Hawaiian place of refuge, near Captain Cook, HI. Until the early eighteenth century, the Pu’uhonua was where those who broke kapu, the laws of the gods, could retreat and gain absolution from native priests. While this practice was lost with the arrival of European explorers and traders, the site remains an icon of traditional island culture and a panacea for those studying it.

        For this project, Pacific Tech worked with NPS to construct a new Administration Building on a historic lava flow. As the site has enormous archeological and ecological importance, Pacific Tech worked full-time with a Park Archeologist to limit the impact of the project as much as possible. A full site survey was completed before construction, marking all items of archeological and ecological importance, especially petroglyphs, which were in abundance throughout the site and required protection during the project. As construction proceeded, every effort was taken to protect the site’s vegetation and limit the disturbance of rock or soil. Additionally, as items of archeological importance were discovered, Pacific Tech worked closely with the Park Archeologist, immediately turning discovered objects over for viewing and cataloging.
