Our Story

In 1985, David Staples graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Construction Management. Soon the opportunity came to move west and he went to work for an established general contractor in Ventura, California. For the next ten years, David learned the tools of his trade, working on a multitude of commercial, industrial and retail construction projects. Grateful for the experience he’d gained and the opportunities given, David started to think about creating something of his own.

In 1995, with the help of his wife Tonya, David started Staples Construction, initially working out of their family’s garage. Believing that pre-construction services held the key to their success, he decided to turn this underutilized planning phase into a competitive advantage. By investing more time in planning and estimating, David was able to mitigate typical construction overruns and delays, while providing the information he needed to value engineer his projects.

In the early years, his business doubled every year. After that, annual revenue averaged $38 million and continues to trend northward. Even during the recession, when other companies couldn’t stay afloat, Staples was able to forge ahead. A commitment to diversification in all its forms helped it survive.

While more than a startup now, everyone on the Staples Construction team believes that the company’s reputation is on the line with every job. That startup mentality has ensured great project communication and quality product delivery for over twenty years.
