PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  Hurricane Sandy Debris Removal Support to the U.S. Department of Interior

PROJECT HISTORY:  The Forsythe National Refuge extends along 50 miles of coastal southern New Jersey in Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean Counties. The Refuge’s primary management activities focus on protecting coastal habitat for migratory birds and ecologically sensitive areas. With respect to Hurricane Sandy’s effect on the Refuge, as the storm surge flooded and scoured the Atlantic barrier islands it transported and deposited debris onto Refuge property; the heaviest concentration of debris accumulated along a meandering wrack line formed at the forest-marsh interface.

ACV ENVIRO SOLUTION: ACV Enviro’s work under this contract was to remove this debris while not damaging the ecologically sensitive area. The primary work area was within the 32,000 acres of salt marsh habitat between Brick and Galloway Townships, New Jersey. The majority of the debris fields were at the forest-marsh interface but additional scattered debris was removed throughout wetlands areas and wooded islands in the marsh. We were responsible for the recovery, removal and lawful disposal of Hurricane Sandy-related debris. A combination of hand removal and equipment removal was used to remove the debris. All work was performed with zero OSHA recordable incidents.

A total of 761 tons of debris, approximately 600 tires, over 20 boats, 78 cylinders and 71 drums of hazardous waste were removed from the Refuge. At the end of the project, ACV Enviro was evaluated under the Governments CPAR program and ACV Enviro received either “Exceptional” or “Very Good” comments concerning quality, scheduling, cost control, management and overall project management.
