Scope Of Work
St. Peter’s building from 1884 had become far too small and obsolete, despite impeccable maintenance and care. Pastor Peter Hoffman was leading a growing congregation in a growing modern community, and running three to four services was taxing on staff and volunteers. After a thoughtful needs analysis, CBC developed a site plan that maintained the historic church building and school while building a new facility along Schaumburg Road. CBC later added a school addition that connected to the church to allow shared use of classrooms and a fellowship hall.
CBC was the design-build contractor for the sanctuary building, and held a design competition among four architectural firms for the Client. Architect Bill Ewald was selected, and together with CBC designed a unique building, that was situated in a mandated Historical Architecture district in the city. A previous pastor had initiated the movement in Schaumburg to protect the historical zone. The building exterior is historically sensitive, while the sanctuary accommodates both traditional and contemporary worship, as well as school orchestra concerts.
The only building site was over an ancient peat bog, so CBC designed a foundation of deep, drilled concrete piers. CBC architects and engineers designed separate foundation supports for the exterior masonry walls and the long-span wood arches over the sanctuary. The tall sanctuary room can expand by 30% by removing drywall partitions below the balcony that accommodates classrooms in the first phase.
With the volunteer participation and the discounts from Christian-owned subcontractors, CBC returned $230,000 in savings to the church.
