Scope Of Work
Description: Fast-Track Exterior Restoration
Types of work: Stone cleaning, stone restoration, wood windows
Awards: New York Landmarks Conservancy Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award
Details: Nicholson & Galloway was hired to restore the exterior of City Hall on a fast-track basis in the summer of 1998. Scaffolds were installed on the building within ten days of project award. Submittals and samples were completed and approved within twenty days.
A day shift and a night shift were put in place immediately to maintain the schedule. In addition, two man-lifts were used throughout the project so that cleaning equipment could be used on the facade in advance of the swing-stage scaffolding.
Our contract was awarded at the end of June and the work was substantially completed by October, a total of four months.
The work of the project consisted of cleaning over fifty thousand square feet of Alabama Veined Limestone, cutting and pointing deteriorated mortar joints, installing lead weather-caps on all watertables, and miscellaneous stone patching and dutchman. In addition, we primed, painted and refurbished all two hundred plus windows. Cleaning methods used on the facade included water-cleaning, poultices, Armex, as well as a host of chemical cleaners.
All work was approved by the New York City Landmarks Commission, and as always, all work was supervised and performed by Nicholson & Galloway's own personnel.
