Scope Of Work
Description: Three Year Exterior Restoration
Types of work: Spanish tile roofing, limestone cleaning, stone restoration, bell restoration
Details: St. Michael's Church is a century old landmark located on upper Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan. Nicholson & Galloway completed a sequential restoration project on all of the exterior surfaces of the church.
Twenty thousand square feet of Indiana Limestone walls were cleaned, repointed and restored. The church bells and their timber supports were dismantled, refurbished and reinstalled.
Roofing work consisted of replacing all gutters and down-spouts with 20 oz. lead-coated copper, replacing internal tower roofs with EPDM systems, and replacement of all Spanish tile roofs.
All eighteen thousand square feet of the existing Spanish tile roofs were stripped down to the wood deck, covered with temporary membranes and re-tiled with new Ludowici clay tiles to match the original. This specialized work included a complicated curved roof with graduated tile sizes over the Apse.
An additional one-thousand square feet of flat roofing on the Rectory was removed and replaced with EPDM roof systems.
As is always the case, all of the work on this project was supervised by Nicholson & Galloway management and performed by our own masonry, sheetmetal, and roofing personnel.
