Our Story
J.H. Strain and Sons, Inc., a family owned company, has been building highways in Texas since 1945 as Strain Brothers Construction in San Angelo, Texas. When President Eisenhower signed the "Federal-Aid Highway Act" in the late 1950s, the family amicably split the company in two entities, moving J.H. Strain and Sons, Inc. to Tye, Texas in 1959.
James Strain, Jr., the oldest son, was President of AGC Texas Highway-Heavy Branch in 1982. The founding family, J.H. Strain, James Strain, Jr., and Ernest Strain are all Life members of the AGC of Texas Highway-Heavy Branch.
The firm is now headed by the third generation of Strains, the founder's grandsons, President Steve Strain, and his brother, Vice President Kent Strain. Historically J.H. Strain and Sons, Inc. has done most of its work for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). However, with the current expansion of renewable energy, they have increased its private-sector work with road and site development projects for wind farms.
