Scope Of Work

Spire was contracted by Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter, to provide design and technical services for their new retail store located in Lone Tree, CO. For this project, three trees were created as homes to three different animals to enhance the store’s design. Cabela’s wanted the use of lighting and audio to bring the taxidermy to life, communicating a specific story: In the case of the bear, who is being taunted by the squirrel who shares his tree, Cabela’s wanted to convey his frustration. Theming designers also wanted the cougar to scare customers intruding upon his territory.

Lighting and audio were used to set the time of day for each tree. Spire brought in A/V Solutions as audio consultants on the project to design an audio system including delay channels that would draw customers into the tree area. The Turkey tree is set in the early morning with the vibrant awakening hues of sunrise and light owl hoots of distant turkey hunters. The Bear tree marks midday with lighting design portraying the bright afternoon rays of sunlight. Audio for this tree included lark calls, the state bird of Colorado, and the ambient sound of branches breaking. Set in the early evening when this animal would typically be out hunting, the Cougar tree is lit primarily with the blue and green palette of twilight, and audio includes cougar growls to scare off predators. Like the Cougar tree, all three trees are interactive due to the use of infrared sensors detecting when customers are underneath each tree. When triggered, the audio track plays the sounds of each key animal. Texture from the lighting on each tree creates a middle-of-the-woods atmosphere which visually transports customers out of the harsh brightness of retail fluorescents into the great outdoors environment they came to Cabela’s to celebrate.

Spire used ETC Source 4 HID Fixtures and Apollo Design’s Multiform HP5-70′s to light each space. And A/V Solutions specified JBL Control 25T’s for directional audio above each tree, JBL 65PT’s for ambient audio surrounding the trees, Crown DriveCore amplifiers , and Alcorn McBride AM4′s audio playback device .
