Scope Of Work
The University of Houston-Downtown’s new recreation and wellness center will accommodate the fitness, health, and wellness needs of the rapidly growing student population. The new three-story wellness center will serve more than 15,000 students; it is replacing the existing sports and fitness facility, which had the capacity to serve only 7,000 students.
The building will feature a student health center, health and fitness counseling space, classrooms, and satellite facilities for the food bank. Through the food café and a demonstration kitchen/seminar room, instructors can provide healthy cooking demonstrations and nutrition lessons. The recreational and fitness space will include multi-purpose studios, cardio and weight rooms, and an indoor bouldering wall. The building will house a three-court gymnasium on the first floor with an elevated indoor running track on the second floor open to the gym below. The main entry of the building will open to a grand atrium that extends up to the third floor. Additional support spaces include locker rooms, a welcome desk, open lounge seating, and staff offices. The project will be completed in the fall of 2022.
