Scope Of Work
Project Type: Dormitories/Barracks, Food & Beverage, New Construction
This Project consisted of construction of one three-story 144 Soldier Barracks Building, one 500 Soldier Dining Facility, three large sized two-story and five medium sized two-story Company Operations Facility (“COFs”). Osborne completed this project 6 months ahead of schedule. Project challenges included:
• Winter construction
• Preservation of classified soils for backfill
• Removal of contaminated soil and asbestos
• Installation of huge glu-laminated wood trusses
• Complicated mechanical and electrical systems
• Over 600 owner requested changes
Particularly challenging was the construction of the 500 Soldier Dining Facility. In order to meet the completion date it was necessary to undertake winter construction methods including the preservation of several thousand cubic yards of classified soils for backfill by way of a steam thermal bed.
Structurally the building consisted of load bearing masonry walls throughout supporting open web steel joist over the food preparation area. The masonry walls in the dining room and servery area support glu-laminated wood trusses made of Alaskan yellow cedar. The cords and webs of these trusses were assembled on the ground within the picking radius of the 150 ton hydraulic crane and hoisted into position in one orchestrated pick each. Each truss was 100 feet long and over 35 feet tall providing an expansive open ceiling look.
In the center of the dining room is a two-sided gas fireplace installed in a stone hearth with a granite mantel.
