Scope Of Work
The Pennsylvania State University selected KCI to perform a variety of tasks to improve the efficiency of electrical and mechanical systems at several of their Pennsylvania campuses. The institution is committed to sustainability and in 2009 adopted a formal energy conservation policy. A significant part of the work supports the university’s mechanical systems initiatives design program, including investigation and implementation of maintenance and energy conservation measures for 15 University Park campus buildings.
KCI also performed several chilled water studies, including one to facilitate a connection between the local supply system from Pond Lab, which was built in 1917 and houses the Department of Political Science, to the continually developing campus-wide plant and distribution system. Using sophisticated SKM software, the firm modeled the electrical systems within the Keller and White buildings. The power study was conducted to determine the existing short circuit, arc flash hazard and protective device coordination levels within the two buildings that total more than 240,000 square feet of classroom and office space. In addition to providing one-line diagrams for each electrical system, KCI made recommendations to minimize arc fault dangers to employees and to help the university comply with OSHA and NFPA-70E requirements. Other projects have included HVAC feasibility studies, environmental assessments and electrical upgrades.
