Scope Of Work

Working with BR Construction LLC, KCI executed the design efforts for energy conservation measures at the Veterans Administration facility in Batavia, New York, including boiler plant upgrades and options for upgrade of the steam distribution system, controls, and fiber backbone. The project scope included the replacement of the five existing boilers serving the campus with two winter boilers, two summer boilers, a deaerator tank, three feedwater pumps, two condensate pumps, and a vacuum condensate return unit.

Laser scanning and modeling, combined with design and construction efficiencies, helped bring four highly efficient replacement boilers online nearly a year ahead of schedule. Our team used 3-D laser scanning technology to inventory the existing mechanical systems and phase construction. Scanning the facility saved both time and dollars by reducing survey needs and providing critical data for hard to access areas.

KCI provided a high pressure steam system design and stress analysis with high pressure PRV station, surface blow down heat recovery system design, boiler room makeup air handler unit design, control room single zone heat pump design, and complete upgrade of the electrical systems along with abatement of all asbestos within the building

Due to the critical nature of the steam systems, the design and construction team were required to provide steam generation capacity with N+1 redundancy at all times. This required significant piping and shutdown coordination, phasing of boiler removals, and installation as well as written standards of operation during construction execution in the event of a primary boiler shutdown.
