In these 'before' pictures you can see that the existing foundation had been patched in many areas, some with a lime-plaster with small stones for support, another area had some cement(picture2) placed in the joints, but the original material that had been used when it was built was just a clay mud. In many of the joints we found it to be falling out, or missing. So in order to not disrupt the existing foundation and possibly cause it to fail, we used hand chisels, hammers and slickers to manually remove the material and than replace it a minimum of 1" thickness between the stones with a recessed joint to give it this appearance. After cleaning out the joints, we used paintbrushes and water to wet the stones to ensure adhesion, we also used a Type S cement to provide the rigidity mimicked by the stones:
