Scope Of Work
The 40,000 SF Community Center is the adaptive reuse of an existing 1916 school building combining a respect for the history of the building and village setting, and with forward-looking design elements. This blending of historic and current design thinking is supported by the fact that this building serves an active, multi-generational community.
Located in a historic district, the renovation included new windows, cleaning and repair of the old brick façade, a safer drop-off area, and adequate parking for visitors. Accessibility was addressed throughout the building to increase the ease of use for all ages.
The welcoming design of the new space offers a lobby with an open layout with a large check-in desk, support spaces and areas to relax, and access the gymnasium and Senior Center. DGA carried out the design and repurposed existing oak closet doors as wall paneling in the lobby. This value management option saved on material cost and added a charming tribute to the building’s history. Interior spaces are daylit by the large exterior windows and raised ceilings.
