Scope Of Work
In early 2012 Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) was awarded the Goethals 345 kV Substation job by Linden VFT, LLC (Linden).
Linden relies on technology developed by GE Energy Financial Services to control the power flow off an existing transmission line from a generator located in Linden, N.J. to Staten Island, N.Y. MEC’s portion of the project was located at an open air substation at the base of the Goethals Bridge on Staten Island. Crews re-configured the switchyard within this existing substation to transmit an additional 300 megawatts of energy to New York City.
Work included both civil and electrical scope and was completed in eleven stages over two years. The civil portion involved excavation, timber and helical pile installation, and the construction of new equipment foundations.
The electrical work included modification of existing two bus configuration into a seven breaker two-bay ring bus substation, control and protection system wiring, site work, foundations, conduits and raceways, installation of bus and support structures, and modification to existing structures.
