Scope Of Work

The Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts, with its sophisticated mechanical and plumbing systems, is no ordinary public school.

The mechanical systems contract included both the above and below ground plumbing as well as all of the HVAC work - which encompassed furnishing and installing equipment, piping, sheet metal, automatic temperature controls, insulation, balancing, and startup/ commissioning for the heating and cooling systems. This work was to be completed in two buildings – one for the high school, middle school, and performing arts center, along with another building for the elementary school. The large auditoriums, elaborate laboratories, sophisticated cafeterias, two completely separate mechanical rooms, and complicated HVAC controls with dedicated zoning and systems for each classroom, provided many opportunities for Binsky & Snyder to utilize their technical expertise and supply the school with top notch mechanical systems.

Binsky & Snyder installed 26 package rooftop units and 248 variable air volume (VAV) boxes to provide both the heating and cooling for both schools. Further heating capacity is supplied by over 2,400 feet of fin tube radiation and numerous cabinet unit heaters. The cooling capacity is augmented by 11 ductless split system air conditioning units and hot water for both schools is obtained from 10 gas-fired boilers. There are a total of 300 plumbing fixtures installed.

Installation time on the site was reduced by more than half thanks to the prefabrication effort performed in Binsky & Snyder’s 30,000 square foot facility in Piscataway, NJ. In total, the HVAC and plumbing systems required the installation of over 70,000 feet of pipe.

Binsky & Snyder is excited to be a part of a LEED project that also provides a significant addition to the community of East Orange.
