Scope Of Work
Challenge
Winthrop-University Hospital was looking to add a Level One Trauma Center to the emergency department that would be able to treat both children and adult trauma patients. The addition needed to be adjacent to the existing emergency department, but not impact the operations of the emergency department for an extended period of time. In addition, the hospital is in a very busy section of Mineola, NY.
Solution
The hospital chose modular construction to keep a majority of the construction activity away from the hospital and minimize the potential impact on infection control.
The result was a 3,400SF Level One Trauma Center addition which is now the only trauma center in Nassau , Long Island that will be able to treat both children and adult trauma patients. The new center is staffed around the clock with a trauma team that includes an on-site surgeon.
The 3,400 SF modular building was built in eleven modular sections, keeping the size of each unit manageable to allow passage over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge as well as the ability to navigate through busy city streets to the site. The units were delivered to a staging lot overnight and all units were installed in one day.
The addition blends seamlessly into the hospital campus and includes access to the existing emergency area, ambulance driver’s area, emergency decontamination shower, holding areas, nurses stations and three Level One Trauma bays.
By utilizing modular construction, a majority of the building was constructed off-site. This minimally disruptive approach allowed the hospital to maintain operations within the adjacent existing emergency department and reduce the total construction time significantly.
