Scope Of Work
Elgin, Texas, northeast of Austin, is known for its unique spicy sausage, and a spring storm rendered the roof of Elgin’s First United Methodist into something very similar to ground mixed meat. Elgin First UMC is historic – a landmark registered with the Texas Historical Commission.
Built in 1906, the gothic revival structure features stairstep gable corbels and a series of steep peaks. JF&A was challenged to abate the existing asbestos roof and replace it with a modern product that would not alter the historic appearance of the church.
Finally, we found a GAF lifetime shingle that gave a historically-acceptable slate appearance. The crews still had to climb over the steep, ornate promontories to accomplish their task, but it was a labor of love – a 100-year-old church still looks 100 years old, and its memorial art glass windows still shine with heaven’s light.
All in a day’s work.
