Thank you so much for your team’s work on the Cellar Project. The new space is getting wonderful reviews and the entire Saks organization is very happy with the project. As you know, this was a complicated project with very hard deadlines. The entire Gilbane team was super engaged and very proactive in “seeing around corners” to identify and resolve issues that could have stood in the way of success. I am really impressed with the job that the project team did on a daily basis. Communication as well as the commitment to meeting deadlines was fantastic. They also had great leadership support.

The first deliveries procedures not only ensured the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) lumber was used at all times but also permitted us to reject any materials that were not LEED compliant. Gilbane forged a strong relationship with The Andersons, Inc. from the onset of the project. The team supported the preconstruction phase to assist with project decisions and establish milestone dates to accommodate the fast-track schedule needs. Additionally, Gilbane assisted the owner in the selection of an architect through a competitive design selection process. The team also provided the owner with training on how to utilize Bluebeam, which not only made electronic file sharing easier, but also ensured the owner was involved in all aspects of the project. As a result of the team’s proactive management efforts, 100% of the project’s contingency costs were returned to the owner after construction was completed.

In my role at the university, I am often equally concerned with both product and process. Gilbane played a significant and integral role in delivering an outstanding product, Skyline Hall, which is receiving rave reviews from student residents and the William Paterson University community. Equally important, Gilbane also lead the team through a construction process that was equally successful on all accounts. From start to finish, the project has been an extremely satisfying and enjoyable experience, and Gilbane is a large part of that success.
Students were invited to attend to project meetings, provide input into the design and construction of the facility that they would ultimately use and attend guest lectures given by the Gilbane team members. Gilbane staff also mentored several students with their thesis work which were on variations of the East Hall design. Additionally, 20 students volunteered and travelled to the nursery to help plant the green roof prior to it being installed.

Part of the program was to create a space for robot teams to use to prepare for their competitions, held in the adjacent building so the robots could easily roll from the prep space to the competition space. However, by utilizing BIM software, Gilbane discovered that the desired heights for the robotics program were not realized in the base design. As part of our intensive collaboration with WPI, our team contacted the lead robotics professor to assist with the re-work, which saved thousands of dollars.
