Scope Of Work
This project included three separate additions to the existing church building, as well as a major change in the overall slope of the existing dirt parking lot, changing the location and expanding the size of the pond and building a new entrance. We started overlot grading of the parking and pond about a month prior to the start of construction on the building. With the big cuts and fills done, much of which was 5'-7' in depth for both cuts and fills, we jumped right in to digging for the largest of the three additions. Before we started the project, we had discussed with the GC the high probability of accumulating large quantities of sandstone that wouldn't be permitted in any backfill. As we dug out for the additions and the new pond this became more and more of a concern. Eventually we decided to rent a crusher to turn all the sandstone into structural fill (see pics). It took most of a week to run all the material through the crusher, but the clean, crushed material that was left was perfect for backfilling the additions (see pics).
We also had to excavate for a retaining wall, but because the soil was unstable when we dug down to grade for the footer, we had to over-ex an extra 3' below the grade for the footer to create a stable zone to support it (see pics).
Once the block layers finished the large addition walls, which was going to be the new auditorium, we jumped inside to backfill for the stage (see pics). During this period we also graded for curb and gutter, islands and sidewalks.
