Scope Of Work

Westminster College, a private liberal arts university in Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded in 1875, before Utah was even a state. The college has grown and thrived since then, and so has the Sugarhouse neighborhood around it. Sugarhouse was once an industrial suburb of Salt Lake City, but now it’s a key part of the metropolis, and space for housing and retail is at a premium. Westminster, with real-estate developer The Woodbury Corporation, called on Big-D to develop a new student housing complex in the heart of Sugarhouse.

On the Draw, an 87,5000-square-foot, six-story, mixed-use project, offers off-campus student housing, classrooms, restaurants, and shops. The housing area has private bedrooms that are integrated in 40 shared apartments. Each apartment is equipped with wireless internet, cable TV, a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and laundry machines. Each bedroom is furnished with a twin-size bed, dresser, closet space, and a desk and chair. On the Draw is open to upper class and transfer students.

In addition, the building has 28,700-square-feet for classrooms and retail. The restaurant chain Freebirds World Burrito, and clothing retailer Uptown Cheapskate, both lease space on the ground level. The building also has an adjacent five-level, 294-stall parking structure; though students may not even need a car. On the Draw is conveniently located near public transportation that can take students to and from campus. Below the building, a tunnel known as “The Draw”, connects Sugar House Park to Hidden Hollow Area along Parley’s Trail. The walking and biking path runs right behind the building and provides easy access to shops and restaurants in Sugarhouse.

In 2013, the project received the Residential/Hospitality Merit Award from Engineering News Record. Also that same year, the Associated Builders and Contractors awarded the project with an honorable mention for Excellence in Construction.
