Scope Of Work
T.Y. Lin International provided design services for two new Taxiway Bridges as part of the Third Parallel Runway program at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, North Carolina. The Taxiway Bridges allow access to the new runway as well as accommodating the construction of future rail lines and access roads, as part of an intermodal freight facility proposed to be constructed in the between the New Runway and the Terminal Complex.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
Taxiway Bridge Structures
NAVAIDs
Airfield Lighting
Both Taxiway Bridges required bridge widths of 217-ft to meet the requirements for the Design Group V aircraft which includes the Boeing 777 and Airbus A340. The Taxiway Bridges have single span lengths of 91.5-ft and 77.5-ft respectively for allowance of future rail and vehicular traffic. The bridge structures consist of a composite concrete deck on steel plate girders supported on concrete abutments. Both ends of the bridges utilized mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and 30-ft long approach slabs.
In addition to design of the Taxiway Bridges, as part of the design team, T.Y. Lin International prepared design documents for the civil, electrical, mechanical and structural components of a complete Approach Category IIIC Navigational Aid system for both ends of the New Runway. The components of the NAVAIDs system included glide slope and localizer antennae, Runway Visual Range (RVR) equipment, emergency generators, and an approach lighting system with sequenced flashing lights (ALSF-II) have light tower heights up to 128 feet. The design also included a fiber optic network to allow control of the system components from the existing Air Traffic Control Tower.
