Scope Of Work

The Virginia Capitol’s original structure was designed by Thomas Jefferson, with foundations dating back to 1785. It is the oldest continuously used Capitol in the United States. It received its National Landmark designation in 1960 and received National Register of Historic Places listing in 1969.

Completed in 2007, Gilbane and The Christman Company provided construction management at risk services for the installation of new roofing, gutter and skylight systems and a 27,000 square foot underground Visitor’s Center that supports the renovation of the Capitol Building and the future needs within Capitol Square.

Other noteworthy components of this historic preservation project included:

Pre-construction

Small and minority business outreach

A new underground Visitor’s Center with exhibit space and additional administration space; a new utility loop; roofing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communications and fire protection upgrades

Hazardous materials abatement

ENHANCING OPPORTUNITIES

The project was completed on-time and within budget and achieved 29 percent Small, Women- and Minority-owned Business Program participation, which exceeded the Commonwealth’s 20 percent requirement.
