Scope Of Work

The UCLA Holly Ridge and Gardenia Way Residence Hall project consists of two cast-in-place concrete structures, one nine stories and one seven stories. The 207,000-square-foot structures house 803 beds. The exterior finishes are a combination of plaster, fiber cement panels, curtain wall, and punched windows. This project attained LEED Gold certification.

One of the most challenging elements of this project was that it was built on a heavily vegetated hillside. There was a 110-foot drop from the upper street to the lower street, and the buildings were in between. The foundations and retaining walls had to be cut into the hillside and coordinated with the site utilities. Determining the correct location for the tower cranes and material hoists was critical for moving material and manpower. PCL used 3D Building Information Modeling to plan the job. The trees and vegetation were removed, areas that had to be shored prior to foundations work were located, and utilities (and how they related to the foundations and the shoring walls) were identified. Modeling helped all parties visualize the sloped hillside, resolve coordination issues, and see how the buildings were cut into the slopes. This facilitated the PCL team’s ability to mitigate problems and increase productivity and efficiency.
