Scope Of Work
Quandel Construction Group was selected to provide construction management at-risk services for the new, 102-bed, five-story replacement hospital in York, PA. The hospital includes an emergency department, diagnostic imaging, cardiology services, surgical suite and a Women’s and Babies unit. A central utility plant connected by an underground utility tunnel was also part of the project.
As part of our contract, we selected design/assist trade partners for mechanical/plumbing, electrical, structural and fire protection. Utilizing an integrated project approach, the team – UPMC Pinnacle, designers, Quandel and trade partners – worked diligently to ensure construction was complete in 24 months.
Due to unique site constraints, the project involved multiple construction challenges. One site challenge was the unsuitable soils with multiple sink holes. To provide a stable foundation system, more than 700 micropiles have been installed. Another challenge was the 18” basement foundation retaining wall set atop concrete grade beams, all of which were poured in the middle of winter. Despite these conditions, the project was completed early and under budget.
