Scope Of Work
Billed as “East Meets West,” the Eastern Extension of the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) was the fulfillment of decades of planning by local residents to connect the Texas towns of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse to the Loop 9/SH 190 Corridor. The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) contracted with Zachry to construct Section 30 of the planned extension.
The three-mile Section 30 of the toll road consisted of three main lanes and two discontinuous frontage roads. Zachry erected nine bridge structures, including the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Railroad Overpass, which required 311,000 square yards of concrete pavement and 339,000 square feet of retaining walls.
Grading work involved more than 1.5 million cubic yards of excavation and 1.3 million cubic yards of embankment, including 615,000 cubic yards of moisture-treated subgrade. Zachry was also required to meet stringent aesthethic requirements for precast and cast-in-place concrete.
Zachry also installed walls, illumination, signing, toll gantries, traffic signals, pavement markings, utilities and Intelligent Transportation System infrastructure, which uses digital information-gathering to make freeway travel safer and cleaner.
The George Bush Turnpike project met the NTTA’s milestone dates for substantial and final completion, helped by Zachry’s innovative traffic control changes that minimized slowdowns from utility relocation.
