Scope Of Work
Michael Baker International is the lead designer for the $127M I-94 Maple Grove to Rogers Design-Build Project for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). This project includes the design of an unbonded concrete overlay of I-94 from the I-494 / I-694 / I-94 interchange to TH 101, covering approximately 9.5 miles. In addition, a new lane in each direction was added from TH 610 to TH 101 for approximately 4.5 miles. Michael Baker designed the maintenance of traffic to ensure that all six lanes of traffic remained open during construction to accommodate an average of more than 75,000 vehicles per day. This included an innovative approach to include up to five lanes on one side of the median with a sixth “local” lane on the opposite side of the median to accommodate traffic entering and exiting the interstate.
This project includes the design of four new noise walls and replacement of the existing Traffic Management System and lighting. Traffic signals have been upgraded at the Maple Grove Parkway and Weaver Lake Parkway and all signing within the project limits have been replaced. Water quality was also improved, with the addition of seven new stormwater ponds and installation of various best management practices (BMPs). The Michael Baker team also designed the renovation and expansion of the Elm Creek Rest Area, the busiest rest area in Minnesota, to accommodate additional truck parking. A new mini roundabout was designed and constructed at Territorial Road and Brockton Lane to facilitate local traffic movements during construction.
