Our Story

In 1952 Jim Vannoy, with the support of his wife Wilma, started Vannoy Roofing company in Jefferson, NC. The original office was a storefront located next to the local beauty parlor. Jim’s character and reputation were his calling card in establishing and succeeding in his new business. Jim and Wilma focused on doing good work, being service minded, and treating people well. Together they epitomized what we refer to in the company as the 4-H’s – Honor, Humility, Hospitality, and Hustle. Due to the company’s good work and commitment to service, in 1963 the company became a licensed General Contractor and continued its steady growth.

EXPANDING THE FAMILY COMPANY 70’S & 80’S

In the 1970’s, their sons Eddie and Mark completed their educations at East Carolina University and joined the family business. Their impact was almost immediate, and the additional capacity quickly enabled the company to serve more and more customers. It was during this time Vannoy Construction began building for Northwestern Bank (a predecessor to what is today part of Wells Fargo). Additionally, Eddie and Mark expanded the nature of the business – establishing a heavy highway division and performing work for the North Carolina DOT. The company also established several quarry operations and asphalt plants. It was during this time period that Vannoy Construction became one of Ashe County’s largest employers.

EXPANDING BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS

Over the past 25 years, Vannoy Construction has continued to take the character of the 4-H’s and the “grass roots builder” mentality to grow a large, but very special company. Vannoy has become one of the leading commercial builders in Southeast and beyond. Adding John Montgomery and Bill Blank to the leadership ranks of the company during this period, the company has grown its annual revenue to over $550,000,000, and now has five offices in North and South Carolina. Vannoy is a recognized leader in Commercial, Healthcare, Retail, Education, Industrial and Civil/Highway Markets. The growth of the company has established it as one of 30 largest private companies in North Carolina, and Vannoy is very proud to be voted one of the “Best/Top Work Places” from 2013 to 2018. Still today though, each member of the Vannoy team is focused on building lasting relationships, and daily demonstrating Honor, Humility, Hospitality and Hustle to everyone we encounter – just as Jim & Wilma would have wanted it.
