Scope Of Work
Challenge: Update and convert Taylor Gymnasium, the original campus athletic building, into a state-of-the-art recreation facility for students, staff and faculty.
Solution: This multi-phase adaptive re-use encompasses five major components: New Infrastructure, Inviting Entrance, Fitness Center, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Administrative Offices. In the first phase the building infrastructure was completely updated, including mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, life safety code compliance, new elevator and three new accessible entrances. Phase 2 involved a complete re-design of the main entrance and interior lobby. In Phase 3, like most of the phases, the primary design intent was to utilize visual transparency throughout the building to create integrated spaces that encourage interaction and participation. Components of this and other phases include a new multi-level Fitness Center, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Administrative Offices. The adaptive re-use of Taylor Gymnasium was recognized by AIA Eastern Pennsylvania with their highest award for Excellence in Architecture.
