The existing archaeology building at the University of California, Berkeley is a historic, brick building that was once a fraternity house before it was remodeled for utilization as an archaeology research and classroom facility. In 2003, Alten Construction renovated this building with Patri Merker Architects with a common goal to maintain the integrity of the building by reusing its existing moldings, brick facade and cornices. During the renovation, seismic improvements and ADA accessibility upgrades were made; mechanical, plumbing, fire sprinkler, and electrical systems were updated; a new elevator was installed; and the existing courtyard was converted into a covered, indoor space. Structural steel members were installed in the existing courtyard to support the new skylight, which covered the previously open area. This work was completed within an occupied, active college campus that had neither laydown areas nor parking spaces.
