LBCC began construction of the Rio Grande Valley’s first and only pediatric hospital and pediatric ER in 2005. As concrete framing on the bed tower progressed, the Owner decided to add a fourth floor to the three story structure. LBCC staff incorporated the change in the schedule and advanced the project to completion. Work was initiated on the foundation of the structure prior to completion of design plans for the elevated portions of the building. The completed structure contains approximately 98,000 square feet including the fourth floor which was added to project during the initial construction phases. The structure consists of reinforced concrete two-way flat plates that provide ample room for MEP systems above the ceiling. The use of concrete flat-plates requires careful design selections and construction procedures to assure adequate slab stiffness and deflection control. Project challenges included integration of unique foam sculptures into the EIFS veneer system to create colorful and imaginative childhood themed artwork. LBCC worked closely with the design team, the EIFS subcontractor, and the artist to bring the concept to life without compromising the building envelope. LBCC staff worked closely with facility personnel throughout construction of this pediatric addition to the Edinburg Regional Medical Center to minimize the impact of construction on existing hospital operations. Infection control protocols were strictly enforced to prevent undue contamination of patient treatment areas adjacent to the expansion project.
