Connolly Brothers played an integral role in helping Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mass. turn tragedy into triumph following devastating fire and water damage. Built in the 1870s, the Eastern Yacht Club sustained damage that required gutting the interior down to its existing framing. The Eastern Yacht Club Restoration and Renovations Committee selected Connolly Brothers to design, engineer, and manage the reconstruction of this beloved 35,000 square-foot, wood-framed, Stick-style building.
All mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems were removed and replaced, and all ground floor structural systems underwent a massive overhaul. Failing wood load-bearing walls and old field stone foundations were replaced with concrete foundations, footings, and a steel structural framing system. With the upgrades, the building now features modern HVAC systems, LED lighting, and modern wiring. In the process, the club seized upon the opportunity to create a sailing center under its famous Samoset Porch.
The repurposed area serves as a multipurpose function room housing the Sailing Office, a bar, members’ locker rooms, and a children’s camp area. With a shared vision to turn a crisis into an opportunity for improvement, the Eastern Yacht Club emerged better than ever in the wake of the fire.
