Our Story
Peter J. Caruso & Sons, Inc. asphalt paving and excavating was founded in 1948. Incorporated in 1972, we are a third generation family business with over 60 years of asphalt paving and related construction experience, dedicated to performing quality work, on time and at a fair price.
Peter J. Caruso & Sons, Inc. has grown from a single bay wooden garage to a 7 bay, full service shop with over 10,000 square feet of office space. With years of hard work, dedication and investing back into the business, the company grew.
We have been building lasting relationships with many of the region’s businesses, commercial property owners, agencies and peers within the construction field for decades. Throughout our history we have earned a reputation for providing first class work with outstanding service at the highest levels of honesty and integrity.
Our organization has been instrumental in helping to construct numerous projects that have shaped the way of life for residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania. We worked on gas stations and housing plans in the 1950s, to local neighborhood businesses and shopping centers in the 1960s. During the first boom in construction of large shopping malls in the 1970s and 1980s, we provided asphalt paving and site development on many familiar department stores, strip malls, restaurants and specialty stores. In the 1990s, we built and expanded hospital lots, roadways, airports, schools, churches and colleges. We have been providing paving and maintenance for Kennywood Park for over 30 years. In addition, we helped to build Lost Kennywood and Sandcastle Water Park. Years ago, we also maintained the parking lots at Three Rivers Stadium.
Over the last decade, we built PNC Park and Heinz Field parking lots, expanded the parking lots at Pittsburgh International Airport 4 times, paved Consol Park in Washington, North Hills Village Mall, Tanger Outlets and re-constructed the Monroeville Expo Mart Convention Center. All of this, while building and maintaining hundreds of sites for local business and government agencies.
We have been recycling asphalt pavements for over 20 years and concrete for about 10 years. Both are crushed and screened for use as a cost saving alternate sub-base material for use in commercial projects. They have both been tested and approved for use by several independent testing laboratories.
At Peter J. Caruso & Sons, Inc., our most valuable resource is our employees. Promoting safety and education within the work place to protect our employees, customers and the public is of the utmost importance to us.
Our supervisors have attended various OSHA safety training courses. We also employ a professional safety firm who assists us in maintaining a safe workplace.
We send key personnel to training courses to keep up with advances in technology in asphalt pavement construction and pavement maintenance. A number of our foremen and management staff have acquired certifications from PennDOT and various trade organizations (NECEPT, ACI, etc.)
From our management team, which has a combined experience of over 200 years in the industry, to our large fleet of equipment, along with a conscientious skilled work force, we effectively maintain a 50 to 60 mile radius of which we can perform our work on a competitive level.
