Scope Of Work

Airbnb saw an opportunity to give life to the heart of its workplace — the communal dining hall and "all hands" assembly area. They desired an open-air market feel and flexibility of space to reflect the company's founding principle of bringing the world together. The construction entailed a fast-tracked renovation within an existing 100 year old San Francisco building where Airbnb is headquartered, 888 Branson Street. The scope of work included demolition and built-out of a new commercial kitchen, dining hall, server space, dishwashing and multi-purpose room. The tight 5.5 month project schedule had its many opportunities and complexities, including concrete demolition of an existing mezzanine slab on the floor above a neighboring and occupied jewelry mart and adjacent to residential units on the property line. Herrero was also tasked with creating new openings in the building façade and seismic upgrades to existing columns within the premises, as well as in the basement below. The new space provides great flexibility for Airbnb to create memorable dining and entertainment experiences for its staff and guests, matching their spirit of hospitality, design and technical innovation. One wall was outfitted with self-serving 25 bar taps. Installation of new AV and data systems complete the modernization of the large assembly space, to host Airbnb's many speaker's programs. MEPF systems were delivered via Design-Build and began only one month prior to construction. Herrero successfully completed the project on time and under budget.
