This hardworking dentist and her family wanted a warm, contemporary Lakeway waterfront home with clean lines and natural materials. Optimizing views was essential, but they also sought privacy, livability and efficiency in the warm Texas climate. Therefore, an insulated, angled glass back window facade faces north. This offers stunning views of the lake and the marina across the way. Also, it provides the artistic owner with the northern light that is so favored by painters.

Cut and fill was used on the steep lot to create a gently sloped front lawn and driveway. This design also takes full advantage of the rear views. One of the setbacks that was handled with elegant ease was the lot shape, which forced the home to be shallow and wide. A horseshoe driveway in front creates easy access to the motor court. The garages are opposed, minimizing their visual impact. High, reeded-glass front windows afford privacy while admitting indirect light just below the eaves. The stacked outdoor living area and screened porch allow the breeze in. However, they are still protected from the western sun by a trellis and vigorous native vine.

An open, floating staircase offers the drama of a double-height space. It filters light deep into the lower floor and breaks up the expanse of the great room. A variety of unique marble countertops, travertine tile, mahogany doors and Brazilian cherry floors warm the space. Obscure glass provides privacy to naturally-lit spaces. Along with this, the white limestone of the fireplace and the facade tie the home to its natural environment. The homeowners call this Lakeway waterfront home “Northern Light” for its site-inspired design.
