Scope Of Work
This project included replacement of the existing Main Street Bridge over Alum Creek in Westerville, , with a new three-span cast-in-place haunched box girder structure. The West Main Street Bridge is a gateway for western neighborhood residents heading to Otterbein College campus, Alum Creek Park, and downtown Westerville. For that reason, the bridge closure period was limited to a single construction season.
Kokosing faced many challenges during construction including: short allowable closure duration, acceleration of the project, challenges working over Alum Creek with fluctuating water levels, and unique shoring required for this type of structure. Demolition, foundation, and shoring work were completed during the winter months, allowing for concrete arch construction to occur during better weather. Over 2,000 cubic yards of concrete, 7,000 linear feet of piling, and 55,000 linear feet of post-tensioning strand were installed on this project.
Aesthetic elements include:
Formed lined abutments
Precast pier nose elements
Variable depth beams
Cantilevered sidewalks
Decorating railing
Lighting
