Scope Of Work
This $74 million heavy grading project located in Winfield, West Virginia, involved construction of 6.8 miles of new four-lane divided highway to eliminate the existing two-lane road, improve safety, and add capacity. This was the West Virginia Department of Highways’ (WVDOH) first Design-Build contract, and they relied on Kokosing to help establish Design-Build procedures for this and future contracts.
To meet an aggressive 24-month schedule, Kokosing worked double shifts to complete the 7.5 million cubic yards of earthwork, averaging nearly one million cubic yards per month. We used our own portable concrete plant to batch and place 130,000 cubic yards of concrete pavement. Kokosing also self-performed the installation of 28 culverts, 39 storm sewer runs, and several waterline and gas relocations.
Multiple value engineering concepts involving drainage and roadway items were proposed and accepted, providing a cost savings to the Owner. This project also used equipment monitoring boxes in the large earthwork equipment to improve efficiency, eliminate downtime, reduce idling and fuel consumption, and reduce the carbon footprint.
The project was completed successfully and opened to traffic ahead of schedule.
