Recognized as a full service commercial and industrial contractor, construction manager and design builder, Powell Building Group was founded in 1991 by John Finch and Jim Powell, as an independent operating division of Powell Construction Company, Inc. (PCC founded in 1969) of Johnson City, Tennessee.  As a part of a planned ownership transition, John Finch began a phased purchase of the company from Jim Powell in 1996 with the buyout completed in February 2002 by John Finch and Tim Prow.
 
Since 1991, John Finch and Tim Prow have completed over $500 million worth of construction contracts for building and managing a diverse range of commercial projects including newly constructed buildings, renovations, additions and tenant build-outs with budgets ranging from $25,000 to $30 million.  Their completed projects include manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, historic renovation and preservation, hospitals, surgery centers, office buildings, schools, churches, hotels, retail stores, parking facilities, industrial plants, airports, stadiums, and special use facilities.
