Scope Of Work

Project specifications:

The customer requested a massive 29 1/2 foot wide x 21 foot projection, attached 2 span (3 post) water proof retractable restaurant patio cover system with front water drainage. The plan was to have rain water drain through the invisible downspouts (inside the posts) and on to the beach sand. The entire system used one continuous piece of fabric and one motor. The system frame and guides are made entirely of non-rusting aluminum (unit is on the Caribbean Sea) which is powder coated using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Frame color chosen was our vendor’s proprietary Grigio Ferro. The stainless steel components used were Inox (470LI and 316) that are of the highest quality and have an extremely high corrosion resistance (unit is on the sea). In fact, the components meet the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy. Fabric is Ferrari 302 Precontraint Color Bianco White, a PVC fabric that is self-extinguishing (fire retardant) and totally water-proof (not water-resistant). This retracting patio cover system has a Beaufort wind load rating Scale 9 (up to 54mph) with the fabric fully extended and in use. This Beaufort wind load requirement was important due to high winds coming off the sea. A hood with end caps was also used to prevent rain water, leaves and debris from collecting in the folds of fabric when not in use. The client chose to control the system with a Somfy remote control.

Purpose of this project. What the client requested:

The purpose of the project was to design and build an open plan beach restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge with a relaxed, but elegant atmosphere and flexible dining and entertainment spaces that capture the sea views and cool trade breezes. Coco Maya Restaurant is Virgin Gorda’s newest restaurant and cocktail lounge fusing elegance with relaxation on a white sand beach. Family-friendly as well as offering intimate dining areas, such as under the retractable restaurant patio cover system, CocoMaya is open 7 nights a week for happy hour & cocktails from 3PM and dinner from 6PM. The purpose of the project was to provide heat, sun, glare and UV protection for restaurant guests so they could sit outside the entire year gazing at the beautiful Caribbean Sea, to allow the area to be used during a heavy rain storm (even hail) and to extend the client’s outdoor dining area. Our client requested a large retractable waterproof patio cover system. They wanted something that was functional in that the water would drain from the rear of the system in to the front beam (extrusion) and then down inside one of the end posts and exit at the bottom from a small hole. The uprights and purlins (guides) of this retractable patio cover meet together at a smooth L-shaped angle flush at the top and without an overhang for a nearly perfectly smooth profile.

Uniqueness or complexity of the project:

What made this project unique is that the location is literally on the beach unlike most restaurant, bar and cocktail areas so a product had to be rustproof and waterproof. The main challenge was the location. The restaurant is located in beautiful Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Since ocean freight is not available from Europe to BVI the crate had to be shipped to Miami, Florida unloaded and then re-shipped to BVI.

Results of the project:
“Brilliant, simply brilliant” was the comment from the client after seeing the retractable patio cover for the first time. The client is extremely satisfied with the results of their retractable patio cover system. The retractable patio cover now makes it possible for the client and their guests to use a very large area throughout the year as the area is now protected from sun, UV, glare, heat, heavy rains and even hail. Mission accomplished – All customer requirements and goals were achieved.
