Scope Of Work

Haselden has completed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Research Support Facility (RSF). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is the United States' primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. The RSF demonstrates the integration of high performance building design and construction practices. The RSF is registered to obtain LEED® Platinum designation — the highest benchmark awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. It has become an industry-changing project and new model for large scale net zero energy buildings. The building is a living laboratory for NREL researchers who are continually monitoring the building’s performance.

The energy model drove the design of the RSF. The “lazy H” configuration allows the Colorado daylight to penetrate the work spaces. Two narrow multi-story office wings are connected by an enclosed bridge. In addition to the maximization of daylighting, energy-efficient features include: under floor air distribution systems, radiant and evaporative heating and cooling; an underground thermal labyrinth, triple pane windows, next generation high efficiency data center, solar panel roofs, and occupant-controlled windows. The result is an energy efficient and inspirational workplace environment for NREL and DOE employees.
